  • My name is Ruard Janssen
home from school I should have been studying for a history test the next day and had borrowed a text book from the school to help my revision Of course at the time I thought it perfectly fine to combine my history revision with our fishing trip a view that was unsurprisingly not shared by my history tutor who was also the head master of the school He remarked angrily how did you get into your head to go fishing with that expensive school book It was at school my passion for fishing began and the rest they say is history I started fly fishing in 1978 also with my brother We had two casting lessons from Henk Peeters and from there went on to the Casting Club of Amsterdam Most of my casting has been self taught and I have also taught club members particularly double houl Since 1982 I have been a member of the Poldervlieg and was one of the founders of this fly fishing association The club was founded by Chris Sijm owner of a fishing shop in Alkmaar I have been on the governing board of the club several times and am currently head editor

that the fly contracted right behind the leader Also I find the head this way more beautiful You fish the fly slowly with figures of eight you can bump and tremble the fly from time to time also slightly a little movement of your rod cannot be lacking from time to time Sometimes you can let the fly quietly sink Eventually the fisherman stipulates if he catches and how much that is The last region day in Wi l nis I fished on a water of about 20 cm deep There were some roach of about 15 20 cm I have tied on one spider and let it sink very slowly Generally he was caught at the first movement and sometimes already at the sink The difficulty was not particularly catching Roach but not to frighten of the fish so that you could catch several Roach from the school They caught Partridge and PT If you want to tie Spiders you have to collect a lot of materials The tying thread is in some patterns rather important because sometimes the body only exists of no more than tying thread Dubbing exists frequently from what I call the debmethode you lubricate economically a little bit of sticky dubbing wax on the thread and then deb it with a fluff of mole dubbing so that there is only a bloom of mole dub on the thread The hackle frequently exists of a feather of the upper part of a wing of a wood cock a waterhen or grouse In many patterns you need a partridges feather and then it is skilful to have a partridge skin so that you can choose the feather of the good size Partridge and PT Thread light yellow Body pheasanttail Hackle brown partridge Ribbing copper wire Iron

or April the fish swims away again to the canal The fish can go in and out to the canal as they wish I asked Martin if he had caught a lot already The only answer was a little chortle and The water is pretty muddy as you can see On his leader were two ML nymphs As usual not too big Hook number 14 or so Before I had my rod out the rod tube I was on my bicycle he had another fish Now it was a Roach of about 20 cm I was going to fish with my splitcane rod seven foot 3 pieces for a 5 It is build by Joost Stolk It is a very fine rod for the Singel because you don t have to throw too far and there is no need of heaving the fish I put my rod together on it came a Ron Thompson reel with a five line a Mill End from Mullarkey I buy these cheap lines because within one year there are many cracks in it My leader consist of one meter braided nylon halve a meter straight and halve a meter tapered to six or seven strands On this meter I knot one and a halve meter nylon 12 100 I always fish with one dropper about 40 cm from the point fly The point fly was the LB 14 and the dropper was the ML nymph on hook 14 After one hour I changed the point fly for a ML nymph on hook 12 We fished about halve an hour on this place We caught a few Roach and some Rudd but nothing special We went to another place about 300 meter from the first In the winter the Roach swim in very big schools

splines in 60 degrees the spline is about to be planed planing in 60 degree rough planing is ready so much curls binding the strips together before baking The three pieces of the rod before baking Heating my oven before the bamboo pieces go in the oven It has to be 160 degrees celsius keeping the air in the oven at 150 degrees celsius by blowing hot air in it The temp is about 150 degrees and the bamboo stays there for 20 minutes to bake the moist out of the bamboo A list of all the digits that shall make the tapering of the rod The gauge is made ready to plane the first spline on the right thickness from 3 33 mm half thickness of the rod to 3 94 mm this is the butt If the spline is almost good you have to measure with a digital caliper gauge measuring every ten cm 4 inch till the thickness is within 3 100 of a mm on the outside of the spline there is a enamel finish I use a scraper to remove the enamel here the enamel is removed showing the fibers on the outside the three pieces are planed helas there is room between the spline number 2 and 3 from the middle section I have to make it again The good news is I had a piece of bamboo that has the knots on the right place I put the splices with the outside of the rod on the glue table the string is removed from the butt The butt the middle section and the top glued on the glue table making the glue Putting the glue on the splices with a toothbrush the glue must be everywhere Here I heat the glued sections on
