  • Anne Frank House: The secrets of Anne's room
make a photograph of me My mother agreed and over a period of years a number of photos were taken In this particular instance I was about three or four years old The photo was taken in the Karolinger Garten a small park in Berlin that still exists I had curly blonde hair long dark eyelashes and big blue eyes I was wearing a long dress made of organza a special kind of fabric and I had a bow in my hair which was then quite fashionable This photograph appeared in 1936 in one of the well known Germans women s magazines Elegance Elegante Welt or Silberspiegel Afterwards at a studio called Atelier Binder a number of photos were made that were sometimes used for advertisements My mother refused to accept money it was not done in those days but we both had a lot of fun To me these photographs are now part of a lovely memory Is that you Yes yes it s me As a Jewish girl at the time of the Second World War Marijke Otten was forced to go into hiding as was her husband Daniel Otten She had never felt the need to visit the Anne Frank House but when they finally did visit the museum together more or less by chance their visit took an unexpected turn Just look at this said Daniel as we were standing in Anne s room There was a photo of a little girl of about two years old cut out of the Libelle magazine It was me At that moment my eyes misted over I knew that photo I d seen it in my baby album all my life with my mother s caption written alongside it Familiar taken for granted even All the people around me were so excited Is that you Yes yes it s me The photo was taken by Maria Austria a well known photographer of the time who sometimes supplied photos to Libelle Marijke s mother worked as her assistant Anne Frank obviously thought the picture was cute cut it out and stuck it on the wall of her room Marijke had never wanted to visit the Anne Frank House but in a way she d been there all along I never noticed Marianne van der Heijden had often visited the Anne Frank House but she only recently discovered that Anne Frank had put a picture of her on the wall of her room I used to be teacher and I d often brought my pupils to the Anne Frank House Strangely enough I never noticed back then that my photo was hanging there I was much too busy keeping an eye on my class Some years ago she was in the museum together with her son who lived in Japan at the time and some Japanese friends My son saw the photo straight away We were dumbstruck and our friends who were great admirers of Anne Frank were deeply moved The

  • The Anne Frank House: Conservation of Anne Frank's room
Annexe was converted into a museum in the late 1950 s the chimney was given insulation so that it extended a little further into the room Because of the altered shape of the wall the wallpaper was also moved upwards and to the right When the wallpaper was detached it offered the opportunity to remove the insulation and the extra brickwork surrounding the chimney and restore the flat wall to its original condition In this way the sections of wallpaper and the pictures could also be returned to their old positions The same applied to a photo of skater and film star Sonja Henie which had been kept in a storage depot for years With the chimneybreast now flat once again the photo of Sonja Henie is back in Anne s room in its original place Backs of postcards At the outset of the restoration work in 1999 only one postcard could be detached from the wallpaper without risk of damage the card showing tea drinking chimpanzees Anne was sent this card in 1937 by her mother who was visiting family and friends in England In the same period in 1999 the pictures behind the pictures were revealed These too could be detached from the wallpaper without risk We had hoped that when all the sections of wallpaper were removed in November 2007 the backs of twelve other postcards could be seen under infra red light but unfortunately we did not succeed in this It was too risky to detach the cards because of the possibility that they would be damaged And so for the time being the text of these postcards including the sender and the postmark remains unknown Preserving the pictures for decades to come An essential requirement for the conservation of the original sections of wallpaper apart from their restoration was the creation of a stable climate To achieve this a climate control system has been installed throughout the entire museum Thanks to this far reaching conservation work the authentic traces of the people in hiding in the Secret Annexe have been preserved for future generations For millions of visitors the room in the Secret Annexe where Anne Frank wrote her diary is a high point of their experience New discoveries A series of articles on the life of the Frank family In the lead up to the 85th anniversary of Anne s birth in June 2014 a series of articles appeared in the Dutch newspaper Het Parool More New diary room All Anne Frank s writings Anne Frank writer More The secrets of Anne s Room The pictures in Anne s room The pictures in Anne s room More Preserving originals Originals are preserved longer The conservation of Anne Frank s room More Anne Frank Collections A special collection of original objects Personal documents and objects belonging to the Frank family the other people in hiding and the helpers More New investigation Anne Franks manuscripts The Huygens Institute for the History of the Netherlands Huygens ING
