  • Thursday's diary
nobody had nor has Digicash continued to be unsuccessful Secure sessions on the web whether they are really secure or not didn t make it because nobody believed at least no manager believed they were secure I knew the idea was good but how could I prove that Some weeks later I met a manager of an insurance company I touched the subject of internet payments which made him argue that internet payments would be big business in the very near future Moreover he expressed the whish of his company to participate in the development of payment systems Are you still with me Let s say the bottomline is the insurance company gave me money to explore the use of calculators for an internet payments system I quit my job And I didn t succeed in proving my system was good What I did succeed in was to set up my one woman company I had clients and I was getting new clients for my consulting business Finally I was in internet business not as an employee but as a self employed consultant I now know my project could and should have been successful if only I had knowv what I know now Oh well I ve learned a lot I was more or less back where I started my working career I graduated as an astronomer I never worked in astronomy because it was much easier and more fun to work in computer science I never regretted leaving astronomy Sometimes however when I read about new discoveries in astronomy or about new kosmology models the memories come into my mind Red dwarf stars the Hubble constant and its influence on the size of the universe or telescopes on Swiss mountains where you could see bats fly in front of your lens When I put up the tent at HIP I found myself next to the Astro Lab The Astro Lab is a bunch of astronomy entusiasts from Holland and Belgium They brought three telescopes two of which have a ccd camera I asked one of the men what astronomy has to to with HIP Oh I don t know really we do have a lot of computers though They will try to show the pictures of their cameras on the net Also they ll point one of their telescopes at the sun As they said just a while ago when I walked into their tent to ask if I could plug my UTP cable in their hub their server has been damaged during transport The harddisk of their main computer has crashed and they re spending all their time on fixing it or replacing it They did let me plub in my mains cable into theirs but my plug didn t fit in their Belgian outlet I hope they ll have ethernet soon My computer has a wireless connection but that does work in the vicinity of the central hall only I d want to have internet in my

s different now so are her clothes Wasn t she taller yesterday Hmmm When she got seated at a computer her own I stopped noticing her I picked up writing this diary The title of a book popped into my mind Artificial Life Alife is a hot topic among AI researchers and has been for some time Why isn t there a workshop on Alife at HIP There s so many nerds here knowing all about computers and nothing about real life Just kidding HIPcar is a form of Alife I suppose Why aren t there artificial visitors to HIP I can imagine a computer program that registers at the HIP registration page and pays by forged credit card and makes up a name for the HIP registration list Then when HIP starts it could join the hip97 channel on irc which is fun btw Oops There s a bug in my screen I mean a real bug I little insect managed to get between the layers of the lcd screen It has a preference for the darker area s of the sreen This Alife HIP participant would gradually become a real participant Of course nobody would really see him I mean IRL but if you meet someone on irc they write some pieces on the HIP site comment on lectures by email volunteer for bartending at the HALL by email a pity they don t show up They d get involved in all kinds of initiatives They d even participate in the preparation of a workshop The Alife person could be fairly wellknown on the net before HIP I mean you read this assuming a human being wrote all this Are you sure Are you sure I m not a robot or Alife person An Alife person is dumb

the length of a parsec which is an astronomical measure of length It s the distance of a start which has a parallax of exactly one arcsecond This person Parsec starts to talk to me and only after a while I realized I knew her About a year ago I met her on IRC She was on a channel I joined that channel out of curiosity and we got to talk She s into AI and Artificial Life while I was thinking whether I would abandon those fields or spend the effort keeping my knowledge about them up to date She seemed an expert in AI especially the psychology of AI She knew all about cognitive modelling We didn t really flirt though others could have disagreed about that We kept meeting on IRC for about a month when she started to write me email In the meantime she made a homepage on AI in a directory at MIT The homepage wasn t much more than a collection of links to relevant AI research all over the world Now I come to think of it there was no real content whatsoever Nothing written by her just links And a picture of her She looked rather beautiful but in the unnatural way some worldfamous models are beautiful Like they re made of plastic I asked her about that but rather than explain about it she interrogated me about how I would have thought she d look I said I never try to imagine how a person looks like when I meet them on the net because I ve proven to be wrong very often She insisted I surely must have had a picture in my mind some ideay how she d look I gave in and described the rough image that

  • Sunday's diary
evening because most parts of the network had been taken down The base stations of the wireless ethernet for the HIPcar and my pc were packed and at our tent there wasn t any network left because someone up the line had left and took their hub with them You may wonder why i haven t written much on sunday I ll explain First there were more things in the program I wanted to see than the previous days A workshop on IPv6 another on wwcn the world wide conferencing network which they expect will replace IRC in due time Then there was a forum in the circus tent on information warfare where two people of CCC and Rop in the forum I ll tell you more about it it was very very interesting Second it was soooo hot today that those periods I wasn t in a workshop or lecture I tried to cool down in the shade with Jolt or water It was sooo hot When planning this diary I didn t know much about the setup of the conference and I didn t know where workshops and lectures would be given I assumed I could move between tents and type while online However the central place was a field one of the wireless base stations was in a tower in the middle of that field mostly for the convenience of the HIPcar and I couldn t use my PC outside because I couldn t see the screen there Only in the shade holding she screen in the right orientation with some effort I could see the screen Not an easy way to type The only place where I could type online conveniently was in the HALL tent which I did a lot I was going to use
