abandoned port facilities Because tourism was a growth market at the time especially for jobs that do not require a higher education a tourist attraction would contribute to growth in employment in the three neighboring districts Kees calculated that an attraction demands high investments of which only a small portion would end up in the local economy It would be wiser to regard the districts of Katendrecht Afrikaanderwijk and Feijenoord themselves as attractions If the people who settled in the new central district were to visit interesting people and special places and spend their money in exotic shops that would not only serve the local economy but a number of social causes as well The rumors about no go areas would be refuted visitors get a more objective idea about the reality of the daily life in districts they would not normally visit and the hosts can show their hospitality tell their story and thus boost their self esteem Long before the term came into vogue City Safari got a very sustainable setup by using only existing venues and moving from host to host on foot or with public transport the ecological footprint is extremely small compared to other leisure activities In combination with the social impact City Safari complied with ISO26000 standard for social an environmental entrepreneurship from the start When Kees de Gruiter developed the concept in 1996 he decided that this should not be a subsidized project If people are not prepared to pay the real cost the enterprise is not viable The city gave a one off development subsidy in 1997 and ever since Marjolijn has operated City Safari as a for profit enterprise From that moment tens of thousands of private persons and employees of companies institutions and government agencies have gotten acquainted with the

a tailor made program No two programs are identical We entertain a big network of hosts that can be extended just for you if there s an aspect of city life that you re interested in and that we haven t covered yet Will a guide accompany us in the city You will go on your City Safari without a guide At the starting point the person who composed your program will welcome you and instruct you about the program You will be handed a printed schedule and a map and you ll be on your way A guide would always be an obstacle between you and the people you meet and you would be following the guide instead of finding your way So the absence of a guide is not an austerity measure Your real guide is just a phone call away for immediate assistance should anything go wrong The absence of a guide and the fact that you go into unknown territory will take you out of your comfort zone this will enhance your experience and open your mind for encounters that will stick with you forever How do you get from host to host The best way to experience the city is to walk short distances and use public transport for the rest We can provide you with day passes for public transport or we can arrange different transport modes like bike rentals or water taxi s And what about physically challenged participants For special needs for handicapped participants we can facilitate the appropriate transport modes and we can create programs that meet the accessibility needs How do we find our way Every group will get a folder with the schedule of meetings and a description of the movements between the hosts addresses A map will indicate where they are in the city If anything is unclear the virtual guide is always ready to help you on the phone What kind of hosts will we visit Anything but the obvious The person in your group who was responsible for making the arrangements with City Safari has indicated what is of interest for your program Whether it is the workshop of a violin builder a cup of tea with an Afghan refugee settling on the couch of an African story teller or a tour of the Food Bank for the poor they will be exclusive arrangements for which City Safari has opened the door For inspiration check the Encounters section of this site Are the hosts expecting us Yes They are not attractions that are always open for business they are private persons that are there especially because they are expecting you They are as nervous about the encounter as you are so please let us know immediately on the emergency phone number if for some reason you re running late for more than ten minutes Do not skip any hosts without letting us know Why do the hosts participate All our hosts receive a reasonable compensation at
