    EFBQ was founded in 1992 under the auspices of the European Commission and aims to bring about a stronger position for the business community in a European market without borders Companies have a strong need to profile themselves as the best within their respective markets and to distinguish themselves from the competition The EFBQ aims to promote test and qualify strategic entrepreneurship in a network the EFBQ Peer Group which consists of exemplary companies from various branches By means of the EC Standard a unique method that assesses all relevant aspects of operational management the EFBQ Peer Group has become the benchmark for strategic entrepreneurship Mission EFBQ The EFBQ promotes tests and qualifies strategic entrepreneurship in a network of enterprises that wish to learn from each other This mission is pursued in various ways For a stronger business community in an international arena Companies and their management draw inspiration from other exemplary companies and branches within the EFBQ network Even companies that are regarded as the leaders in their respective branches can further expand their horizons learn from developments in other branches and realize continuous improvement In doing so companies remain at the top of their game and management can

    measures the foundation and the feasibility of the adopted policy the state of the enterprise the cohesion and consistency of the management and the extent to which the policy is geared to the market situation and demand During the assessment over 60 aspects of the organization s policy are compared to the EFBQ benchmark The standard is determined by the best in class i e the top score A currently assessed participant may have earned this but in some cases companies that were assessed in recent years have achieved this score 200 assessed companies They form the benchmark for one or more policy aspects until a newly assessed company achieves a new top score This system ensures a regular reassessment of the methodology because the relative value of a score that was once high may decrease in the context of a continuously improving network of enterprises that never cease to learn The EFBQ assessment is conducted by two assessors the Preferred Assessor and the Coordinator of the EFBQ s Assessment Centre and consists of two main components verification interviews and document examination An assessment will not require more than half a day from each member of the management team to prepare the examination collecting the strategic and operational documents that are used to manage the enterprise and have the verification interview with the assessors A mirror on strategic entrepreneurship The EFBQ network consists of approximately 100 enterprises that operate in various branches and have different ownership structures both family businesses and operating companies that are part of a larger corporation In terms of size the companies range from having at least fifty to thousands of employees with revenues varying from several millions to over a billion of euros Within this network the knowledge and experience available are exchanged among the

    businesses and trading enterprises both business to business and business to consumer companies Furthermore the size and ownership structure can vary considerably with both family businesses and operating companies with revenues ranging from several millions to over a billion euros However all of these enterprises aim to continuously improve in terms of profitability continuity and the creation of value They want to share knowledge and experiences Selection of companies Only after a careful selection procedure and by invitation only companies can join the Peer Group The EFBQ Selection Committee is responsible for ensuring that the composition of the network retains its quantitative standard and will be qualitatively improved To this end a few basic criteria are used such as The number of employees working for the enterprise lies between 50 and 50 000 The enterprise presents itself as ambitious and positions itself in the market in a positive manner The board and or management team aim s to continuously improve the organization and focus es sufficiently on strategic entrepreneurship or strive s to improve in this area Board and management team members are willing to have their own performances examined and to benchmark the results to other organizations Board and management team members are willing to share their knowledge and experience with the other participants The enterprise is able and willing to become an active participant in the Peer Group Benchmark The participating companies offer each other a benchmark for strategic entrepreneurship and the enterprise s ability to anticipate This is accomplished through individual contacts and through the Management Tables among other things A more formal benchmark is established during the EFBQ assessment This assessment measures the foundation and the feasibility of the strategic framework and its implementation in the rest of the organization Furthermore the state of the enterprise

    particular attention to this issue During the assessment the foundation of the objectives among other things is assessed and it is examined whether the organization has sufficient financial means to realize its ambitions The insights of the companies that participate in the Peer Group are mutually shared by means of the knowledge exchange that occurs during the Management Tables as well as one on one contacts Continuity The long term continuity of the enterprise is an aspect that does not always receive the attention it should get at many enterprises especially at those that are part of a holding company corporation The parent company is often largely focused on financial results especially if it is publicly listed or a private equity firm and the consequences of certain measures are not always sufficiently taken into account The extent to which the continuity of the enterprise is secured is interwoven throughout the entire EFBQ methodology and forms a key component of the benchmark Is enough attention being paid to external threats Is there an adequate understanding of the potential strategic risks an enterprise is exposed to as a result of strategic decisions Has the enterprise adopted a conscious and concrete policy that ensures its continuity Particularly the family businesses which are part of the EFBQ Peer Group like to share their knowledge and experiences with regard to ensuring continuity with their fellow participants Creation of value Any business does not only aim to make money and secure continuity but also to increase the value of the enterprise Creation of value however can be interpreted differently by different companies Some focus on creating shareholder value while others emphasize the improvement of the enterprise s image or market position In an increasing number of branches and companies Corporate Social Responsibility is a key aspect
