  • Erasmus MC : One in three Dutch people will be diabetic
    manifests itself later in life The disease can significantly increase the risk of death cardiovascular diseases blindness kidney diseases and dementia Erasmus MC researchers were the first in Europe to study the life long risk of diabetes and prediabetes Our data reflect a clear picture of the status in the Netherlands says Symen Ligthart PhD scientist at Erasmus MC and the first author of the article Our study shows that in our Western society one in three people eventually develop diabetes and one in two will ever experience pre diabetes People with pre diabetes have elevated blood sugar levels but are often unaware of this A 45 year old person with pre diabetes has 75 percent life long chance of developing diabetes The researchers used data from the Rotterdam Study ERGO a long ongoing population based study For this study the researchers analyzed the data from more than 10 000 participants over a period of 14 years These participants did not suffer diabetes or pre diabetes at the start of the study The research has been published in a leading scientific journal the Lancet Diabetes Endocrinology Read more in the press release Date published 11 November 2015 Direct to News

  • Erasmus MC : 25 years of ERGO
    obtained mean that the study helps create a healthier global population The ERGO study is known internationally as The Rotterdam Study and its outcomes are closely monitored More than 175 researchers since 1990 have received their PhD based on the results of the study and they published more than 1250 scientific articles in leading international journals In these 25 years 15 000 residents of the Ommoord district of Rotterdam have contributed to medical science says Professor Albert Hofman founder of the ERGO Study Getting the participants to have their health checked once every four years enables us to study health problems common in old age This improves our understanding of the development and progression of diseases such as cardiovascular diseases brain diseases and eye diseases ERGO and the participants have in this way made an important contribution to the health of the global population The study had several highlights in the 20th century Hofman continues In 1990 Princess Juliana opened the ERGO research center in Ommoord This indicated how important this research was At the time it became clear that the number of older people was increasing and that old age is associated with the onset of serious diseases and that little was known about the causes of these diseases In 2005 the MRI room went into operation in the Ommoord Health Center The introduction of an MRI scanner specifically for a population study on site was a world first Since then thousands of scans have been made and we now know for example that dementia causes changes in the brain long before the patient complains of symptoms This is why we will be expanding the study in the coming year to include 5 000 new participants from the Ommoord district aged over 40 Read more in the press release

  • Erasmus MC : Insight in aging

  • Erasmus MC : Short series of radiotherapy at a higher dose
    in Rotterdam and the Netherlands Cancer Institute Antoni Van Leeuwenhoek in Amsterdam For the study the standard radiotherapy treatment for prostate cancer 39 sessions was compared to a new method in which the number of radiotherapy sessions is almost halved 19 sessions but the dose of radiotherapy per session is increased Lead researcher of the study Luca Incrocci who is radiotherapist oncologist and professor at Erasmus MC presented the results on Sunday 18 October during a major Oncology conference in San Antonio USA The results of the new faster method appear to be even better although strictly speaking this has not yet been statistically proven says Incrocci The patients have been monitored for five years Now five years on it has been shown that 77 of the group undergoing the conventional treatment is free of cancer In the group that received the short series 80 is free of cancer The great advantage for patients is that they will have far fewer hospital visits Moreover Incrocci thinks that the care costs can be reduced as more patients can be treated per radiotherapy machine Read the full press release Date published 19 October 2015 Direct to News archive Press releases Mail us
