    the co existence of cyclists en pedestrians in city streets The program contained of a mixture of speakers from Madrid and elsewhere Jan van der Grift joined on behalf of I CE All messages were clear Madrid should provide pedestrians and cyclists with more space more attention and thus more safety From three other Spanish cities representatives told their stories Zaragoza Seville and Barcelona already value the presence of cyclists in the city streets All three speakers had convincing stories about the general improvements it delivers Among them accessibility and a sociable public space where people can meet each other Potential conflicts between cyclists and pedestrians do exist but are outlined by the potential conflicts between the two groups combined and motorized transport Jan talked about a Dutch survey which proved that conflicts almost never occur Cyclists tend to adjust their speed and behavior to the circumstances The study made clear that only if the intensity exceeds 200 pedestrians per meter road width separation of cyclists and pedestrians in different roads is relevant In Madrid the car is still being king Everywhere large curves prevent cars from lowering their speed One way streets of at least 3 lanes are common
