critically endangered species and 2 other endangered sea turtle species foto3 The Chief of the Departement of Nature Conservancy visits the project The small grant just under USD 25 000 is the first step of getting into the USAID system where future funding potential can reach grants of 100 000 and up Furthermore now Yayasan Masarang is registered within the US DUNS system required as a contractor to US Gov or grant recipient as in this case we will be elligable to apply for US Fish Wildlife Service grants USFWS comes under US Gov Dept of Interior but they have grant opportunities for international wildlife conservation work These grants are applicable for areas of work for mitigating wildlife trafficking wildlife rescue as well as dealing with human wildlife conflict issues From US FWS there is also a dedicated grant for Great Ape conservation of up to 50 000 year that can help the efforts in Sintang and elsewhere for the orangutans There is a lot of potential We have packed a lot in this proposal which combines covering funding for work we are already doing commited to under the rising tide of increased costs in North Sulawesi work that was done in Masarang mountain area in the past that can be transferred to the coastal communities as well as boosting resources to achieve more with the community along the coast for sustainable development We hope to be able to live up to the challenge without any unforseen drawbacks and deliver the project results for benefit of the local communities along the coast for the protection of endangered sea turtles and other wildlife and for raising the profile of our organisation to attract further funding for our work We see this as a valuable stepping stone to strengthen our efforts in the field We received notice on 25th April that the grant will be awarded with the first 15 000 to be transferred to Yayasan Masarang by mid May the rest upon submission of mid term report in October this year Masarang is most pleased with this recognition from an influential donor as another step to significantly contribute to nature conservation through true involvement of local people foto3 the result of all the efforts Date 2014 07 11 11 56 12 0 Go to Edit news main Keep updated your email address won t be given to third parties News The MessageBottle supports Masarang Short update on the fire situation in Indonesia Water from the Masarang Mountain They stole my stolen view Car donation for Sintang Sweating for Charity Additional Tree Nursery Built at Tasikoki for Coastal Projects Visiting Masarang in Tomohon SOAP Processing in tengkawang factory in Tembak Black Crested Macaques move to new enclosure View all recent articles Masarang Foundation Partners Over Masarang Missie en doelen Werkwijze Willie Smits Masarang International 20Steven Smit 20Marie José van Schaik 20Wim van de Meerendonk 20Esther Klinkum Masarang Indonesië 20Nico Tatontos 20Onna Senduk 20Jimmy Mantow 20Sonny Ering 20Youdi Windah 20Jus Kamagi 20Deiby Pitoy

much as possible of the wildlife they are currently care for Tasikoki can only release wildlife native to North Sulawesi but also that is challenging mostly because of lack of suitable sites to release the wildlife However in 2013 Tasikoki were able to release 1 hornbill 2 bear kuskus 2 ornate lori and 1 green sea turtle Some of the wildlife currently at Tasikoki such as the earlier mentioned confiscated crocodile and reticulated python are ready for release but awaiting approval for a suitable release location Wildlife that is high on the list to release in 2014 are the red and blue lories and a group of black crested macaques hopefully at least 30 of the 40 currently at Tasikoki can be released in one group Wildlife trade In December 2013 the forestry department encountered a trader who was trying to transport 113 red and blue lories local name Sampiri from their native range in Talaud a small island group in North Sulawesi to the Philippines The total living population of these birds is estimated at only about 1000 so the trader was carrying about 10 of the total population Fortunately an officer of the forestry police caught him and confiscated the sampiri birds The birds were transported to Tasikoki where they arrived in very bad medical condition because of malnutrition since they were caught and the transport to Tasikoki in small cages which took a couple of days and without their premium flight feathers which the trader had pulled At Tasikoki the birds received proper medical treatment Now 7 months later most of the birds have grown back their premium flight feathers are healthy and back to their normal weight Unfortunately some of the sampiri birds flight feathers were permanently damaged These birds will probably be introduced in a breeding program Hopefully about 65 of the birds can be released back into the wild this year in cooperation with the organisation World Parrot Trust The trader was prosecuted to a jail sentence of 16 months the highest punishment ever given in the province of North Sulawesi in a wildlife trade case We would like to thank the World Parrot Trust for their support Confiscated Sampiri below foto4 Is in his new enclosure Construction work in the centre Early 2013 the new enclosure for the sunbears Binbin and Bonbon was completed They enjoyed their new environment very much as can be seen on the pictures on the Tasikoki Wildlife Facebook page when the bears were first introduced Another large project that was completed was reinforcing the enclosure for the orangutans Is and Bento They are now respectively about 9 and 11 years old and had gained quite a lot of strength Therefore their enclosure was no longer strong enough causing safety risks for the orangutans as well as for the Tasikoki staff and volunteers After the orangutans were introduced to their strengthened enclosure they still managed to find some week spots and the welder had to spend quite some time

with the issue of the palm oil companies because it is not easy to convince someone especially with our human resources and capabilities In July 2011 we were visited by a group of students from the organization Global Exploration from the Netherlands lead by Mr Jean Kern or kindly referred in our area as Mr Jho At the same time our society held an event that we always do every July Gawai Dayak Gawai Dayak is our ritual way to thank the almighty for all the harvest we got through the year The visit from the students of Global Exploration was consider very unusual unbelievable and something completely new for us We could only direct them to the forest in our area because we have to admit that we are all not really good in English We needed Mr Josafat a teacher of SMA PANCA SETYA High School in Sintang to be able to communicate with the students and their teachers Mr Jean Kern told us that he had a friend named Dr Willie Smits who is highly involved in Orangutan conservation and one of the advisory staff team from the former Ministry of Forestry He also said that our forest is suitable for the Forest Conservation Program and that it later can be used as an Orangutan sanctuary Our societies strongly agree and hope someday sooner or later the Orangutans can return to our forest In late September of 2012 Mr Jean Kern invited Dr Willie Smits to come to our hometown to observe and assess the feasibility of our forest After reviewing everything Dr Willie Smits declared that the forest is definitely suitable for Orangutan conservation And then he made a plan and now there is a clinic for the orangutans which also functions as the headquarters for the orangutan keepers and vets In terms of progress and well being the village of Tem bak is very advanced compared to other villages in the upper section of the Tempunak region Here are some highlights about our community Firstly we are the first village who has built a simple easy low cost and eco friendly micro hydro power plant in the area of Tempunak even throughout the Sintang regency foto2 Hydro power plant Tem Bak It s become a motivation to us and to many people to use the advantages from nature Off course we do that in an eco friendly way we pay attention to the environment and we protect the forests our forest because we realize that water sources would never exist without the jungle Secondly we are one of the few villages communities that still stand by our commitment to reject the influence of palm oil companies or investors in our area Once we sold our land we can never grow it back since there are no factories that produce land Instead we choose for the growth and livelihood for our future generations Thirdly we are also one of the few groups of people who are
