Dayak people who live here want to continue to live in this pristine and beautiful forest and they also have the knowledge of to live from this mixed forest At this time we support them with a sugar palm nursery and build a factory in which the nuts of the Tengkawang tree can be processed to sustainable fat There is also a nursery for keeping medicinal plants so we can preserve the knowledge of these plants We are also busy mapping the Saran forest so we can preserve this piece of Borneo from the greedy oil palm industry By harvesting in the future the sugar palm trees and Tengkawang nuts we hope to generate additional revenues so people can continue to live here and protect their own forest When I m back in the Netherlands I m going to put even more effort into letting people know what disastrous consequences oil palm plantations have for the future of the local people and let s not even talk about the disgraceful way in which the territory of the local people is taken away by them These forests are the lungs of our world and we ourselves are trying to squeeze it shut foto3 After West Kalimantan I travel to Sulawesi where I get reacquainted with our animal rescue centre Tasikoki Here I developed my enthusiasm for the work of Masarang and it s great to be back I like very much to report to all the people that went to Tasikoki that many fine steps have been set forward Both for the comfort and support of the volunteers as for the comfort of the animals There are more and better cages there are new paths and there are places made for composting In addition animals have been released into their natural environment or have been moved to places where they beling better I also see a lot of new animals including the critically endangered Sulawesi macaques Obviously you re never finished in an animal rescue center but my compliments to the permanent staff who are working 365 days in the year I also visit the office of Masarang Indonesia to see how the money from Masarang International is going into the various projects in Sulawesi and West Kalimantan Off course just when I enter the building the power supply fails something that happens regularly in Indonesia We can not sit behind a computer to check a few things but we go through several papers from the various binders and I am glad to see that everything is perfectly in order foto4 left Along with ranger Sonny in front of the Masarang office right Dirk Jan tasting sugar palm sap I also went with ranger Sonny and employee Dirk Jan to the Pullisan forest In 2002 Masarang bought this barren area and planted trees Wonderful to see how this forest is regrown in a short time Later on we will give more information on the website about what we will do with

are rescued from the illegal wildlife trade they can form new groups with the large solitary males remaining at Tasikoki so they can eventually also be released In the new forest enclosure they will be fed with food that is harvested from the location where they will be released That way the monkeys can already get used to the smell and taste of the food so it will be easier for them to adapt to the new environment Tasikoki and the forestry department are currently surveying several areas that have been pointed out as possible release sites foto2 Map of the current primate center and planned forest enclosure Above is a map of the current primate center with the quarantine enclosures in blue the solitary enclosures in green and the group enclosures in yellow The enclosure marked in orange is the area planned for the new forest enclosure Worldwide there are 21 species of macaques On the island of Sulawesi alone we can find one third of the species spread over different regions of the island On the map below you can see drawings of the 7 sulawesi macaque species and the regions in which they live Next to the 38 Macaca nigra Tasikoki currently takes care of 7 Macaca nigrescens 6 males and 1 female 14 Macaca hecki 10 males and 4 females 3 Macaca Tonkeana 3 males and 8 Macaca Maura 7 males and 1 female at Tasikoki When the Macaca nigra group is successfully released Tasikoki will continue to finding possibilities for release for them as well The other groups of macaques will then share the new forest enclosure by rotating weekly foto3 Map of Sulawesi with the habitats of its endemic macaque species Date 2014 04 04 13 30 35 0 Go to Edit news main Keep updated your email address won t be given to third parties News The MessageBottle supports Masarang Short update on the fire situation in Indonesia Water from the Masarang Mountain They stole my stolen view Car donation for Sintang Sweating for Charity Additional Tree Nursery Built at Tasikoki for Coastal Projects Visiting Masarang in Tomohon SOAP Processing in tengkawang factory in Tembak Black Crested Macaques move to new enclosure View all recent articles Masarang Foundation Partners Over Masarang Missie en doelen Werkwijze Willie Smits Masarang International 20Steven Smit 20Marie José van Schaik 20Wim van de Meerendonk 20Esther Klinkum Masarang Indonesië 20Nico Tatontos 20Onna Senduk 20Jimmy Mantow 20Sonny Ering 20Youdi Windah 20Jus Kamagi 20Deiby Pitoy 20Pingkan Supit Masarang Hong Kong Oostenrijk Jaarverslagen Contact Herbebossing 20Doelen 20Resultaten 20Boomkwekerijen 20Onderzoeken Redding bedreigde diersoorten en biodiversiteit 20Doelen 20Resultaten 20Tasikoki dierenopvangcentrum 20Zeeschilpadden 20Biodiversiteitsmonitoring Ondersteuning lokale cultuur en bedrijvigheid 20Doelen 20Resultaten 20Bibliotheek 20Duurzame landbouw en assistentie kleine boeren Studiebeurzen kansarme kinderen en milieu educatie 20Doelen 20Resultaten De rol van de suikerpalm in Masarang projecten 20Suikerpalm wonderboom 20Palmsuiker Unieke eigenschappen milieuvriendelijk en lekker Word donateur Eenmalige gift Voordelen doneren aan Masarang Vrijwilliger worden Zij helpen Masarang al Schenken met belastingvoordeel Zelf geld inzamelen Nieuwsoverzicht Nieuwsarchief Archief eerste

wood The remnants of the pressed nuts are made into fish feed so the factory is a zero waste system We had expected a mass flowering year since it had been four years ago that the Tengkawang trees had one of their specific mass production years but it turned out that a smaller percentage of the tree only is producing fruits right now Since we were a little late in starting the building of the factory this is actually advantageous so we can get experience first with the process and the organization of the collection of the fruits while proving to the Dayak communities that the concept can work Next year when there will be a massive amount of seeds we hope to be ready with more units than that should be build through the cooperation with the Credit Union organization that provides credits to the local cooperatives to set up village based activities foto2 The ceremony was a big success Above is a picture of the leader of traditions of Tembak pak Apui greeting Father Jacques the head of the Kobus Foundation and 45 year resident in West Kalimantan working with and for the Dayak communities Without the trust of the Dayaks in the Catholic Church we would never have been able to do so much for these remote communities that still stand up for their forests and keep out the destructive oil palm companies from their traditional lands despite immense pressure and manipulation that is taking place on a daily basis there foto3 During January s visit I worked with David Wefers Bettink on the optimalization of the processing of the nuts for which occasion we turned the orangutan clinic in Sintang into a simple applied laboratory mostly equipped with kitchen devices We learned a lot about the millennia old skills of the Dayaks to obtain the jungle fats And in the process made an interesting instant drink from the illipe nuts as well Willie Smits January 2014 Date 2014 02 21 13 12 36 0 Go to Edit news main Keep updated your email address won t be given to third parties News The MessageBottle supports Masarang Short update on the fire situation in Indonesia Water from the Masarang Mountain They stole my stolen view Car donation for Sintang Sweating for Charity Additional Tree Nursery Built at Tasikoki for Coastal Projects Visiting Masarang in Tomohon SOAP Processing in tengkawang factory in Tembak Black Crested Macaques move to new enclosure View all recent articles Masarang Foundation Partners Over Masarang Missie en doelen Werkwijze Willie Smits Masarang International 20Steven Smit 20Marie José van Schaik 20Wim van de Meerendonk 20Esther Klinkum Masarang Indonesië 20Nico Tatontos 20Onna Senduk 20Jimmy Mantow 20Sonny Ering 20Youdi Windah 20Jus Kamagi 20Deiby Pitoy 20Pingkan Supit Masarang Hong Kong Oostenrijk Jaarverslagen Contact Herbebossing 20Doelen 20Resultaten 20Boomkwekerijen 20Onderzoeken Redding bedreigde diersoorten en biodiversiteit 20Doelen 20Resultaten 20Tasikoki dierenopvangcentrum 20Zeeschilpadden 20Biodiversiteitsmonitoring Ondersteuning lokale cultuur en bedrijvigheid 20Doelen 20Resultaten 20Bibliotheek 20Duurzame landbouw en assistentie kleine boeren Studiebeurzen kansarme kinderen en milieu
