site collections in a single Web Application is the recommended approach In SharePoint 2013 you can have multiple URLs associated to a single Host Named site collection This approach is a more scalable as you are not tied to zones anymore and can have more than 5 URLs for a site now You can also map HTTP and HTTPS to different sites If you want different authentication method for URLs you can still use zones To manage the URL mapping you have to use one of the following two Powershell commands Set SPSiteURL Add or change a URL mapping for a site Remove SPSiteURL Remove a URL mapping from a site Host Named site collections are not a good choice if you want to do one off the following If you use the OOB Self Service Site Creating Feature If you want need the extra security of running multiple web apps with separate application pools Unique Wild Card Inclusions Also remember that Wild Card Inclusion are created per web app and are shared across all Host Named site collections If you want unique Wild Card Inclusions you should use AAM Easy device channel switching using bookmarklets Device channels are awesome
