  • Mavention.nl v3: How we did it?–the publishing site: implementing user experience - Blog - Mavention
the content Things like Web Parts are not included in the search index so should you want for example to have a content form Web Part somewhere on your website you would have to add it directly to the publishing site This scenario as well as the fact that the publishing site is also a site that you have to build and maintain once in a while proves that also the publishing site has to support the full featured authoring mode Designing for optimization To support content authoring as well as having the website optimized for anonymous visitors we decided to use the Device Channels capability to create two channels one for the authoring and one for the public site of our website As opposite to our authoring site the Default channel on our publishing site is mapped to the public Master Page while the Authoring channel is mapped to the authoring Master Page which is a copy of the standard seattle master Because the majority of traffic on our public site comes from anonymous visitors we decided to have a separate channel for the authoring experience and associate the public experience with the Default channel Building for optimization As I mentioned before the authoring Master Page is a copy of the standard seattle master Master Page with just a few Content Place Holders added to match the public Master Page The real work started with build the public Master Page Build the public Master Page When building our public Master Page we started from an empty Master Page and added only the things that we needed for our site Thanks to the separation of the authoring and the public experience and the fact that all of the content on our website is read only for the visitors we were able to remove all kind of controls such as the Ribbon script links or even the SharePointForm control which renders the so typical for ASP NET applications page wide form tag As a result we got nearly 100 control of the generated HTML output which is great for many reasons such as Search Engine Optimization but also accessibility and implementing custom user experiences in general Such approach is not new to us here at Mavention and we ve been using it with quite some success for a few years now with SharePoint 2010 The biggest change with SharePoint 2013 is that now using separate Master Pages is supported natively by the platform what minimizes the amount of custom code required to get this concept to work And even though Device Channels haven t been designed for separating the authoring experience from the public part of the website great results can be achieved Building Page Layouts On our new website we re using the Cross Site Publishing XSP capability that allows us to publish content from the authoring site to publishing sites using search Using XSP has consequences with regard to how the content is displayed on the site With traditional

  • Quickly search in SharePoint from your mobile device - Blog - Mavention
phone So unless your organization portal has been optimized for mobile devices you would have to use the standard SharePoint search experience on your mobile phone which is painful to say the least There is however a better way to search for information in your portal on a mobile phone Easy searching in SharePoint with Mavention Mobile Search Mavention Mobile Search is a free SharePoint hosted app that allows you to quickly search for content stored in your SharePoint tenant All you need to do is to install the app from the Office Store in your portal and share the link to the app with your users Once they open the app on their mobile device and pin it to their home screens they will be able to search in the company portal with a single finger tap Designed for mobile SharePoint 2013 Search offers rich capabilities and while we could have implemented all of them in Mavention Mobile Search we chose optimization for mobile experiences instead The first thing that you will notice after loading the app is the simplicity of its user interface The app does one thing and one thing only and it s to help you find the content that your are looking for Already after your first search query you will notice that the app is faster than the standard SharePoint user experience Thanks to its simplified UI and rendering the app loads fast and once it s loaded it s only the raw search data that is transferred to your mobile device When searching for the right content it might just happen that you won t find what you are looking for right away Mavention Mobile Search allows you to load additional search results simply by scrolling further down the page also known as

  • Two things that are not super obvious when working with the new Office 365 Groups API - Blog - Mavention
s documents is different and requires you to get a hold of the user s tenant name and the Group ID in order to build the link which is https contoso sharepoint com layouts groupstatus aspx id 14cb9281 5d0c 4bfa 99da 1eef714c2d2b target documents Even though these links work your users might experience an inconvenience when using the direct links to conversations and calendars Outlook on the web is a Single Page Application that uses the URL hash to keep track of the path to the current view such as Inbox your personal calendar or conversations of a specific Group Unfortunately if you are not authenticated in Outlook on the web the first time you access a deep link in Outlook on the web you will be redirected to the Office 365 login page Once you login you will end up in your personal Inbox rather than in the location designated by the deep link you used initially Using the same link for the second time takes you to the right place but by that time you already left the application and you would first need to get back to it to click on the link again Showing Group s picture One of the important elements of Groups are their pictures Pictures enhance Groups identities and help users distinguish the different Groups within their organization When building solutions on top of Office 365 Groups it is therefore essential to maintain that consistent user experience and include Group picture next to its name Following the documentation on dev office com you will find out that in order to retrieve Group s picture you have to perform a GET request to the following URL where contoso onmicrosoft com is the name of your tenant and the GUID is the ID of the Group for which you want to retrieve the picture https graph microsoft com beta contoso onmicrosoft com groups 01d360b6 2487 43f2 b968 180754ef4c7e GroupPhoto value What you get back are the binary contents of the Group s picture What the documentation doesn t mention however is what you are supposed to do with it Using the URL mentioned above with an img tag is not an option since it requires authentication information to be provided in the Authorization header So there is something else that you have to do in order to display the Group s picture in your application but what There is more to a blob than meets the eye Getting the contents of the Group s image seems straightforward After all how hard can executing a GET request be Unfortunately if you don t do this correctly you will spend a lot of time wondering why your image doesn t show in your application not knowing that its contents that you have just retrieved are invalid Assuming you re using AngularJS in your application when retrieving Group s picture using an HTTP request you need to extend your request with the responseType blob request header http url

  • Working with Office Add-Ins and External Users - Blog - Mavention
updated add in we did do some testing ourselves and one thing stood out It is not just related to the Word and Excel Online clients yet we just didn t test it in this scenario before External Sharing With Office 365 it is easy to share any document or library with external parties When something is shared you have the option to give those users the option to edit a document When editing a document that contains an Office Add In any employee can add a add in from the corporate catalog These add ins are available for your employees and can be added as soon as you have read access to your app catalog Besides the read access you will need to have contribute permissions on the file Now if you share a document you can hand out those contribute permissions however if you open a document as an external user without access to the App Catalog you will be prompted with an error Depending on your Office 365 tenant configuration any user can share documents Yet without access to the app catalog the add ins will throw an error As by default the documents will show the add in the error is prompted each time you open a document Luckily once you have added the external user to the App Catalog all problems are solved Out of the box when you create a new App Catalog site you will see that the everyone group does not have any permissions And in a real world you would probably would never add a single user So it would be a best practice to add the Everyone group to the visitors group This should give them enough permissions to view the add ins and work with them Obviously there is
