  • Upscaling or Outscaling - Blog - Mavention
was with the standard VM setup that every VM starts with That is 2 vCPU s and 4GB memory For the second test we upscaled the resources to 4 vCPU s and 12GB Together with extending the resources we updated the VM client tools and moved the DB server to faster SSD storage which became available after the first test Page load time dropped to an average of 11 seconds This had to go faster So we asked the virtualisation team to upscale to 6 vCPUs The result was that page load times dropped to approximately 8 2 seconds Because this farm has to replace the current intranet farm where page loads are an average 5 to 6 seconds This had to go faster So upscaling the first time resulted in a performance gain of approximately 83 The second change from 4 vCPUs to 6 only resulted in a 27 gain For a third time we asked the virtualisation team to upscale the VMs to 8 vCPUs After this question we were told by the virtualisation team that upscaling is not always a good solution because for example you have to keep in mind the ratio between vCPUs virtual CPU and pCPUs physical CPU More CPUs and more memory not always makes a VM faster It might result in slower VMs Read more about vCPUs and pCPUs is these two articles http it toolbox com blogs sanman the vmware virtual cpu dilemma the optimum vcpu to pcpu ratio 50028 http www the little things net blog 2012 03 22 virtualization vcpu provisioning best practices Outscaling a farm to spread the load to more WFE servers might be a better solution At this very moment we are going to test with more WFE servers I shall update this article soon and

to another drive We use a script to copy all content from c inetpub to i e d inetpub Read this previous post for the script I decided to do some research about the question at the beginning of this post and share it with you The outcome is not shocking but even so good to know In this blogpost by Thomas Deml of Microsoft it is stated that WINDOWS SERVICING EVENTS I E HOTFIXES AND SERVICE PACKS WOULD STILL REPLACE FILES IN THE ORIGINAL DIRECTORIES THE LIKELIHOOD THAT FILES IN THE INETPUB DIRECTORIES HAVE TO BE REPLACED BY SERVICING IS LOW BUT FOR THIS REASON DELETING THE ORIGINAL DIRECTORIES IS NOT POSSIBLE So according to this post removing the original inetpub directory would not be wise But is it not supported I found on the IIS7 FAQ site this discussion about moving the inetpub directory to another drive in IIS7 In part 3 1 of this discussion is the following statement For IIS 6 0 we can change the default drive where Inetpub directory locates during installation of IIS This functionality was removed from IIS 7 0 We can achieve this via the appcmd command line tool if required A script was published on the following blog link to blog of Thomas Deml which can be used to perform the action By this forum post I would conclude that changing the default location of the inetpub directory is supported by Microsoft They even provide the tools to change the location Finally I found this post at the IT Hassle site Here one of the people replying to the discussion says At some point our Microsoft rep became aware that we were deleting Inetpub from C and warned us this was not supported by Microsoft He pointed me to a

was that a Standard license was installed duh But I m stubborn and looked to the Upgrade and Migration part of CA because I was not sure that the Standard license was used at installation The Convert License Type page showed me this Hmmmm strange I thought that the license type should show up here So I also looked at Upgrade and Migration Enable Enterprise Features see below first image and Enable Features on existing sites below second image The page Enable features on existing sites says that the Standard features can be enabled what should indicate that a Standard license is used but the Enable Enterprise features page indicates the opposite Confused So I wanted to know another way to check the license type My colleague Waldek Mastykarz http blog mastykarz nl told me to look into the registry on the SharePoint server at this key HKEY LOCAL MACHINE SOFTWARE Microsoft Office 14 0 Registration 90140000 110D 0000 1000 0000000FF1CE Clicking on the key DigitalProductID indicated the license is a MOSS FIS Enterprise license see below But this should not be a reason for all the vague licensing information SharePoint shows So Waldek found a kb article http support
