  • older material to St Agatha such as documents from religious houses that were closed What can one find in SVD s provincial archives Among other things the historiography of the various religious houses that served as seminary or training education centre as well as the ups and downs of its occupants and how changes took place Letters and reports of missionaries posted abroad have been retained as well as photos many and souvenirs Furthermore there are many metres of publications and periodicals such as Katholieke Missiën Catholic Missions calendars and almanacs and the archives of religious house Deurne where SVD s book trade was located From there many books and periodicals were distributed via dozens perhaps hundreds of propagandists Every missionary and member of the congregation of Dutch or Belgian descent is included in the archives Important or interesting confreres have their theses autobiographies or suchlike preserved There are many registers of confreres from the Netherlands and Belgium and from the international SVD family Catalogues from 1913 up to now can be consulted They indicate the steady growth of our international religious missionary congregation SVD was founded in 1875 by the German priest Arnold Janssen The archives has work of

  • of three Dutch members Fr Theo Vilsterman 1857 1916 successor of St Joseph Freinademetz as Provincial in China Fr Peter Noyen 1870 1921 missionary in China and Fr Francis de Lange 1871 1938 from Techny USA may have helped to establish a Minor Seminary for Dutch candidates In the meantime Fr Gerard Schijndel parishpriest of the Dutch village Boerdonk near Veghel had contacted Fr Blum in 1909 He asked him to send a teacher of philosophy for the students of his own small missionhouse unless you want to take over my whole enterprise It was Fr Schijndel who drew the attention of Fr Blum to a boarding school of the Ursuline Sisters at Uden This building from 1845 was up for sale The SVD bought the house for 62 650 Dutch guilders in May 1911 On August 17 1911 the Generalate appointed Fr Peter Noyen as the first rector of the missionhouse at Uden dedicated to St Willibrord a British monk who brought the Catholic Faith to the Netherlands in 690 AD Peculiar is the stipulation of the Generalate that close attention had to be paid to the study of the German language Special days had to be observed during which the Dutch community should speak German only These regulations however were in fact of course ignored by the Dutch SVD On the feast of St Willibrord November 7 1911 the new Minor Seminary with 38 alumni was opened St Willibrord at Uden flourished to such an extent that a novitiate was started in Teteringen near Breda on September 8 1915 Soon the need was felt to separate the novitiate from the Major Seminary So 20 novices entered a new building at Helvoirt near s Hertogenbosch on September 3 1921 On September 8 1924 a second Minor Seminary was started

  • continue the missionary presence Older confreres are still there to coach and support them SVD is the only congregation in the Netherlands and Belgium that assigns New Missionaries to pure missionary situations and not to ordinary parish work Such activities may include Cooperation with the local Dutch Belgian church to make these more missionary i e for them not to only focus inwardly but stretch their horizon to the whole world and its needs To that end we want to provide pastoral care to the local church from our special SVD mission Dialogue with faith seekers Today there are many people searching for spirituality We anticipate to respond through courses or sessions of prayer and meditation This is a wish of the General Chapter SVD 2006 Dialogue with the poor This means contact with the poor disadvantaged or marginalized in society For instance homeless people or migrants or refugees with which our brothers from other continents our so called new missionaries can empathise because they themselves come from those regions After all they are here in Europe in the same kind of situation It could also be people from the Netherlands or Belgium with a severe mental or physical disability This is done under a decision of the General Chapter of 2006 Working with the Bible in small groups or communities Interfaith Dialogue Working with existing organisations that aim to deal with the people of other religions Eastern and Reformed Christians Muslims Hindus and so on The General Chapter of 2006 recommends this Working with Christian youth organisations with the intention to open their vision and activities for a universal missionary vision To dedicate oneself in different ways to the Christian communities of immigrants to possibly serve as a bridging function between them and the local church This could be
